Looking for a new female heroine in the male dominated sea? So was I.
I’ve been reading a lot more comics lately, featuring a mix of classic and new characters. By far the best story that I have read lately comes from the brilliant created team behind Batgirl of Burnside: Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart, and Babs Tarr. Motor Crush tells the story of Domino Swift, a young female, motorcycle racer living in Nova Honda, the site of the Grand World Prix. By day, Domino trains with her dad to win the upcoming race. By night, however, Domino races in the illegal Cannonball, a street race where gangs race for an illegal drug called crush. Crush is strictly for motorcycles and makes them go faster. It will kill a person if ingested.
That is, unless that person is Domino. She has no idea why, but she actually needs to take crush to live. In addition, she is trying to discover her origins, along with navigating her relationship with her ex-girlfriend. I don’t want to give too much else away because you really need to read this serious. The creators are really doing something special here. I haven’t seen a lot of other stories like it in any media.
One thing that definitely sets Motor Crush apart of from other series is the demographics that Domino is a part of. Comics are starting to get more and more diverse and we see a lot of diversity in her. How many other stories, comics or otherwise, can you think of that are centered around a female hero that is black and queer? People need diversity in comics so that everyone can find a character that they see themselves in.
The best part is that Domino exists in a world where her race and sexuality aren’t obstacles for her. They are just part of who she is, but don’t define who she is. That’s a world I would love to live in.
